Bangalore University was founded more than four decades ago, in July 1964. It was originally founded as an offshoot of the University of Mysore in order to cover higher education in Bangalore. Initially, Central College and the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (U.V.C.E.) formed the nucleus of Bangalore University. To keep pace with its rapid expansion, the University moved into a new campus in 1973, the 'Jnana Bharathi'(JB) campus, occupying 1100 acres of lush, verdant space.

Over the course of existence, B.U. has emerged as one of the largest universities in Asia, with a student population of over three lakhs. In 2001, it was accredited by NAAC, with a five star status. Today it has six main faculties, namely, Arts, Science, Commerce, Management, Education, Law and Engineering. It has 41 post graduate departments, one post graduate centre in Kolar, three constituent colleges, 473 affiliated colleges(of which 88 have PG courses), and several other centers and directorates of higher learning and research under its purview. At present the University offers 51 PG courses.B.U. has always adhered to qualities of academic excellence, and has strived at, and succeeded in, achieving quality and relevance in higher education. It aims at promoting research in frontier areas and to achieve social gains through its activities.
The Department of Commerce was established in the year 1969, with the aim of providing full-time higher learning in business studies. It is located in the Central College campus, a green and vast space in the heart of the city.

The Department, outside academics, has also conducted several national level seminars and workshops relating to different areas of commerce and management studies. It is actively associated with professional bodies and institutes like the ICWAI, ICAI, Inter-University Council for Management Education and Research, Indian Commerce Association, Indian Accounting Association and the All India Management Association.
In the year 1998, with the echo of dynamism, the Department of Commerce conceived a unique, highly specialized, self-financed, four semester post graduate professional course, known as “Masters in Finance and Accounting” ( MFA ).
